The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) is Singapore’s only natural history museum, which is located at the National University of Singapore. We are looking for two motivated and hands-on individuals who will assist with the maintenance of the museum’s biological specimen collections, facilities, gallery, and research publication archive.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of the museum’s biological specimen and digital image collections, and research publication archive
  • Maintenance of the museum’s building facilities, and gallery
  • Maintenance work includes curation of specimens, their containers and contents, topping up of preservatives, cleaning of premises; and operation and maintenance of gallery exhibits and equipment
  • Packing and mailing of specimen loans to other institutions
  • Participate in field surveys and specimen collections
  • Assist research visitors and students, and oversee volunteers in collections
  • Supervise contractors who are performing general repair and maintenance works
  • Other duties as and when assigned
  • Training will be provided by curators and managers on the methods and safe practices of handling preservatives and specimens; and other gallery and facilities maintenance matters

Requirements:

Essentials:

  • GCE ‘O’ level, GCE ‘N’ level or Diploma holders
  • Must be able to speak and write English
  • Must be able to work on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), Public Holidays on a regular basis; and occasional irregular hours as and when required
  • Must not be afraid of seeing, and handling dead animals
  • Must have a keen interest in animals and the natural world
  • Patience and able to cope with repetitive work
  • Able to work in a team and independently
  • Demonstrate ability of having fine hand motor skills for handling specimens (especially dried ones) without damaging them
  • Open to learning new skills and assist in fieldwork
  • Must not be afraid of heights (for work carried out above ground level)
  • Must be able to work in a potentially crowded environment and in the presence of museum visitors (and handle potential enquiries from visitors politely and patiently)
  • Able to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Must be able to carry a fire extinguisher weighing at least 3KG with one arm while holding the nozzle in the other arm
  • Has no known allergies to ethanol, moth balls (naphthalene or 1,4-dichlorobenzene), and formaldehyde.

Desirables:

  • Some knowledge of insect and aquarium fish husbandry in the hobby trade
  • Some basic knowledge about electrical circuits or building maintenance
  • Knowledge of photography and documentation
  • Class 3 vehicle driving licence
