Visiting Scientist Feature – Dr. Dmitry Telnov

POSTED ON BY Clarisse Tan

A while back, we hosted Dr. Dmitry Telnov from the Entomological Society of Latvia. Dr. Telnov is an entomologist with a research focus on two beetle families, Anthicidae and Trictenotomidae.

As our museum researchers have collected a large amount of beetle specimens from recent survey efforts, we invited Dr. Telnov to the museum to provide his expertise on identifying Anthicid beetles. Beetles from the family Anthicidae superficially resemble ants, and are also known as ant-like flower beetles or ant-like beetles.

During his 4-day visit, Dr. Telnov examined around 1,000 beetle specimens collected from different areas in Singapore, such as the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Out of these 1,000 specimens, he managed to pick out seven Anthicid beetle specimens, and borrowed the specimens back for further analysis.

Dr. Telnov was here with his wife, Dr. Kristina Greke, a zoologist with a research focus on the mollusk families Diplommatinidae and Pupinidae. During her visit, Dr. Greke examined specimens from the Diplommatinidae family, and borrowed some of the specimens for her own research.

We wish Dr. Telnov and Dr. Greke all the best in their research, and hope to see them again!
