LKCNHM Thursday Talk Shop Season 2

POSTED ON BY Aw Jeanice

The LKCNHM Thursday Talk Shop series is back by popular demand!

This June holidays, our Outreach and Education Unit will be hosting a special two-parter over the following weeks to dissect Singapore’s natural history from two different perspectives: how humans have shaped the environment over time and interpreted the wildlife around them. Share this with your circle of friends and we hope to see you there!

Session 1: Nature & Us

Humans have a complicated relationship with nature. While we have undeniably caused significant deforestation and habitat loss in Singapore through land use change, we have also been able to extend a helping hand via species recovery efforts and conservation plans. As boundaries between nature spaces and the urban environment become blurred, we also find ourselves closer to wildlife. Join us as we discuss these forces of influence while chatting with a special guest, co-CEO of ACRES, Ms Anbarasi Boopal.

Session 2: Folklore, Myths and Misconceptions

Our perceptions of wildlife around us also affects our relationship with it. Woven into the fabric of our natural history are several local folktales that feature animals in Singapore, and they show us about how people used to view these animals—as mysteries, threats or useful resources. We will also be discussing some modern misconceptions with a special segment related to one of our favourite pastimes—eating!
