The Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad (SJBO) 2022 practical competition was held on 17 August 2022 (9:00am to 3:00pm) at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

Organised by the Singapore Institute of Biology (SIBiol), in collaboration with LKCNHM and supported by the Ministry of Education, SJBO saw a total of 28 students from seven participating schools.

The schools represented were Hwa Chong Institution, Catholic High School, Raffles Girls School, Anglo-Chinese School (International), Raffles Institution, NUS High School of Math and Science and Nanyang Girls High School.

This year’s challenge was set by the LKCNHM team, which included museum curators, Dr Hwang Wei Song, Dr Chan Kin Onn, Dr Jose Christopher Mendoza, Dr Ang Yuchen and senior education officer, Jharyathri Thiagarajah.

Students had the opportunity to work with various specimens.

The tasks set were based on phylogeny (which is the study of the evolution history of a species or group), insect morphology and adaptations, crustacean biology and botany. These tasks required students to tap onto various skill sets ranging from observational to identification and inferential skills, making them a difficult endeavour.

Students were brought on a tour to explore our two galleries.

Students were also treated to a guided gallery tour and a behindthescenes collections tour, courtesy of the Outreach and Education Team who coordinated the programme.

With that, that’s a wrap for SJBO 2022! Thank you to everyone who participated!
