September School Holidays: Edutainment Zoom Season 2!

POSTED ON BY Aw Jeanice

The school holidays are back and so are our Edutainment Zoom sessions for children and young families!

Every day from 8 September (Tuesday) to 12 September (Saturday), 4–5 pm, our staff and museum partners will be hosting a series of educational and entertaining web sessions via Zoom. Look forward to story-telling, dragonfly drawing, educational and hands-on activities for the young, even the young at heart!

If you have been joining our Edutainment Zoom sessions since Season 1, you will find some familiar faces too. Some of the partners from Season 1 will be making a comeback and expanding on their previous topics so you can grow your newfound knowledge even further.

Do register early for each session via the links below and we look forward to meeting you online!

Session 1 – Let’s Compost with Worms! (8 September 2020)

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/118421206015

Composting is a process of recycling organic material through decomposition, and it is useful in making nutrients more accessible for uptake by plants. But how do earthworms come to play a part in this?

Find out from Dawn Sng of Cultivate Central as she shares with us how to rebuild soil by turning food and paper waste to useful compost with the help of earthworms! She will also share more about these curious creatures with games, art activities and lessons on composting in this action-oriented Zoom session!

Session 2  Muddy Mudflat! (9 September 2020)

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/118420720563

Mudflats are important habitats for a range of mud-dwelling animals such as molluscs, worms and crustaceans. During low tides, these exposed treasures provide migratory shorebirds a crucial and rich source of food during their stopovers. Want to know where you can find mudflats in Singapore, and what animals can be found there? Join Lester Tan from the marine conversation group of Nature Society (Singapore) on a fun learning adventure on our mudflats and its secrets!

Session 3  Microorganisms: How can they help you? (10 September 2020)

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/118421346435

Microorganisms are everywhere around us, in the environment (soil, air, rivers and seas), in our food and even in our bodies. Depending on the species, they could be friendly or harmful to us.

In the second part of Green Faculty’s educational series on microorganisms, Dr Hia Hui Ching will introduce their multifarious uses in diverse industries such as agriculture, animal husbandry, construction, water treatment, healthcare and recycling. Enter the fascinating world of these small creatures, and learn the ways we can harness their great power for the benefit of humans and the environment!

Session 4 – Storytelling & Eye Education (11 September 2020)

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/118420947241

As reliance on digital technology increases, we witness a rise in an array of issues from myopia, device dependency, gaming addition, cyberbullying and lack of outdoor activity among children. Our partner Plano will be sharing more through an engaging story-telling session to educate young children on how they can take responsibility for their own device use, and share good screen use habits! There is also a short quiz with prizes to be won.

In the book “The Ray Keepers” from The Plano Adventures book series, Professor Plano is back again with his twin sidekicks, Zed and Zee, only this time they are on a journey to find ingredients for the Clear Vision Recipe!

Session 5  Dragonfly Drawing (12 September 2020)

Registration: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/118421073619

Pick up a pencil and draw with artist Shermin Sim! Having learnt from masters in Hollywood, Shermin will be using a technique that is clear, defined and easy to grasp. Join us and bring your drawings to life!
