May School Holidays Special!

POSTED ON BY Aw Jeanice

The May school holidays have begun! Our Outreach and Education Unit are eager to share with you their new web-talk series, ‘Thursday Talk Shop’.

Our Education officers will be inviting special guest speakers with expertise in natural or environmental sciences, and chat with them about their work experiences.

In our first session, we were joined by Foo Maosheng, Curator of the Cryogenic Collections and avid insect-lover to talk about why insects give many people the creeps, and how we can learn to love them.

In our second session, we invited Dr Theresa Su, the Education Manager at the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML) to chat with our staff about marine research collaborations and their impact on conservation, as well as the importance of effective communication to help bridge the gap between researchers and members of the public.

In our third and final session, marine pollution researcher Muhammad Reza Cordova sat in with us to talk about plastic pollution in Southeast Asia and its impacts on biodiversity. Reza’s research interest ranges from marine pollution and environmental stress to ecotoxicology, and he holds multiple appointments in his tireless efforts to better our understanding and management of marine pollution. He lectures at several Indonesian universities, and is a co-founder of several local community activities in Bogor, Indonesia. He is also currently part of the Indonesian National Coordination Team to develop a science-based policy for marine plastic debris management in Indonesian marine ecosystems.

Update: the series has come to an end. Thank you for joining us!
