Job Opportunity: Specialist Associate

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum is looking to hire a Specialist Associate to assist with the (1) scientific bioimaging of the Museum’s collection and research specimens, (2) curation of the Museum’s invertebrate collections, and (3) specimen collection efforts in local and overseas field surveys. 

 

Description 

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

Primary duties

1) High-resolution macrophotography of the Museum’s collection and research specimens;
2) Curation of the Museum’s invertebrate collections, involving – 

  • Sorting, preserving and vouchering of specimens 
  • Maintenance of specimens, their containers and preservatives. 
  • Packing and mailing of specimen loans to other institutions 

3) Participating in local and overseas field surveys and specimen collections 


Ancillary Duties
1) Assisting research visitors and students, and oversee volunteers in collections Maintenance of the Museum’s building facilities, and gallery
2) Other duties as and when assigned. 


Training will be provided by curators and managers on the methods and safe practices of handling preservatives and specimens; and other gallery and facilities maintenance matters. 

 

Qualifications 

  • GCE ‘O’ level, GCE ‘N’ level or Diploma holders. 
  • Must be able to speak and write English. 
  • Must not be afraid of seeing, and handling dead animals 
  • Must have a keen interest in animals and the natural world 
  • Patient and able to cope with repetitive work 
  • Able to work in a team and independently 
  • Demonstrate ability of having fine hand motor skills for handling specimens (especially small, dried invertebrates) without damaging them 
  • Open to learning new skills and assist in fieldwork 
  • Must not be afraid of moderate heights (for work carried out above ground level) 
  • Able to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel 
  • Must be able to carry a fire extinguisher weighing at least 3KG with one arm while holding the nozzle in the other arm
