Marina East

Description

Marina East is one of Singapore’s more recently reclaimed land located between East Coast Park on its east, Marina Reservoir on its west and the East Coast Parkway (ECP) to the north. It currently houses the Marina Bay Golf Range and Gardens by the Bay (Bay East).

Bay East is a 32 ha garden sitting on the eastern bank of the Marina Reservoir, with a water theme. Attractions include the Food Gardens which showcases rice paddies and ponds with water chestnuts and lotus. Marina East is still undergoing development and one of its future developments is a water-sports facility, PAssion WaVe@Marina Bay, slated to open in the first quarter of 2014, which will offer kayaking and dragonboating. Part of the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) is also undergoing construction here in Marina East. Once the construction of the MCE is completed, works will begin to link Marina East to East Coast Park which is already linked to other areas in the eastern part of Singapore by the Eastern Coastal Loop of park connectors.

Although much construction work is ongoing in this area, Marina East is still home to a small patch of natural mangroves that lies between its shoreline and its bounding seawall. Several mangrove flora and fauna can be found here including Api-Api Putih (Avicennia alba) and fishes associated with the mangroves, like Giant Mudskippers (Periophthalmus schlosseri) and Banded Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix). Along the shores are also some coastal plants such as Sea Lettuce (Scaevola taccada), Sea Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus) and Sea Almond (Terminalia catappa).

Getting there

Marina East can be accessed by bus 158, alighting at the bus stop along Rhu Cross. Alternatively, visitors can get to Marina East via Marina Barrage.
