+ Show description

Kingdom:Animalia
Phylum/Division:Arthropoda
Class:Insecta
Order:Odonata
Family:Protoneurida

Description

Members of this family are small, lightly built with narrow hyaline wings. Males especially have very slender abdomens, (hence their common name), which are nevertheless distinctly expanded towards the final segment which bears the short, robust anal appendages. Males often have colourful marking on the thorax or abdomen but some species are dark-coloured. They tend to hover often while flying or before landing to the tip of a leaf.

Some 250 species (in 25 genera) occur worldwide, most in the tropics and subtropics. Nine species are known from Peninsular Malaysia, four in Singapore.
