Description

Members have cylindrical cells that are united into unbranched filaments. Chloroplasts are ribbon-shaped and spirally arranged, an axial plate or two to four disk to stellate shaped. Filaments are usually free-floating and intermingled with one another to form a slippery mass. Or they may be sessile, attached to a substratum by specialised cells.
