Description

This is a family of small perching birds with fairly long tails. The family comprise wagtails and pipits. They have long legs and claws. They feed on insects and other invertebrates, which they pick from the ground. Most species inhabits open country. All members have a distinctive strong and undulating flight. A ‘chsik’ call is made during flight.

Wagtails have long tails and wag them constantly, hence the common name. Most have colourful plumages. Five migratory species occur in Singapore.

Pipits are more drab in colour. Two species occur in Singapore.
