Description

This is a family of small-headed, plump-bodied birds with soft plumage. It includes doves, which are usually small (21 cm), to large imperial pigeons (38–47 cm). In general, doves tend to spend most of their time on the ground, while pigeons are arboreal and feed on fruit. Pigeons and doves feed on fruit, berries or seeds. They build a flimsy platform of twigs where usually two white, spherical eggs are laid. They are strong fliers and make a noisy, flapping sound in flight. Flight is usually fast and direct.

Twelve species are recorded in Singapore.
