Description

Lycophyta, also known as fern allies, is an ancient group of spore-producing vascular plants. The early species of lycophytes were among the first land plants to colonise the earth's surface during the Silurian Period (450 million years ago).

Lycophytes became the most diverse during the Carboniferous Period (360-300 million years ago), forming the first forests on land. Today, the lycophytes fall mainly under two extant groups, the genera Lycopodium (club mosses) and Selaginella (spike mosses).
