Description

A family of climbing shrubs or trees. The leaves are simple and alternate. The leaf stalk is furrowed above, sometimes winged. The nerves on the leafs are strong and very straight, protruding from the leaf margin as teeth. The flowers are solitary or in small racemes, showy and bisexual, with five flower parts. The stamens are numerous, either free or in bundles. The fruit varies among species, some are fleshy berries while others are a dehiscent aggregate of follicles. The seeds of most species have arils.
