+ Show description

Kingdom:Animalia

Class:Aves
Order:Pelecaniformes
Family:Ardeidae

Description

Members of Ardeidae have long legs and long slender toes, long pointed bills and a long neck. Unlike similar-looking birds in other families such as storks and ibises, herons fly with their necks retracted, not outstretched. Many species developed long, decomposed ornamental plumes on head, breast and back during the breeding season. All herons and relatives also have powder down.
